Matcha 101

Everything you need to know about the world's most intentional drink.

i.

What is matcha?

The whole leaf — not just a steeping.

Matcha is finely ground powder made from shade-grown green tea leaves. Unlike regular tea where leaves are steeped and discarded, with matcha you consume the entire leaf — which means more antioxidants, more nutrients, and a smoother, more sustained energy than coffee.

ii. Know your grades

Three grades of matcha.

What we serve01

Ceremonial

Highest quality. Made from the youngest tea leaves. Bright green, smooth, naturally sweet. Best for drinking straight.

02

Premium

Great everyday matcha. Slightly more robust, earthier flavor than ceremonial.

03

Culinary

Made for cooking and baking. More bitter, darker color. Not ideal for drinking straight.

At Kita we use ceremonial grade matcha only — because you deserve the real thing.

iii. The secret ingredient

What is L-Theanine?

L-Theanine is an amino acid found naturally in matcha that works synergistically with caffeine. It promotes calm alertness — focus without the jitters. It's why monks have used matcha for centuries during meditation.

The energy is clean. The mind stays clear.
